Fluid Intake in Kidney Disease

How much to drink when the kidneys are failing, and how to manage thirst.

Last updated: 2026-09-24

Failing kidneys cannot remove excess fluid, which builds up as swelling and breathlessness. A daily fluid limit may be set.

Managing thirst

  • Suck on ice chips (counted in the limit)
  • Limit salt, which increases thirst
  • Rinse the mouth without swallowing
