Hemodialysis: What to Expect

How hemodialysis works, the schedule, vascular access, and the diet that goes with it.

Hemodialysis uses a machine and a filter to clean your blood. Blood leaves your body, passes through the filter, and returns — all within a single session that usually lasts about four hours.

Schedule

Most people go three times a week. Some centres offer longer or more frequent sessions for gentler treatment.

Vascular access

You need reliable access to your blood. A fistula — a surgeon joins an artery to a vein in your arm — is preferred because it lasts longer and gets fewer infections than a catheter.

Eating well

  • Keep salt and fluid low
  • Watch potassium and phosphorus
  • Eat enough protein as your dietitian advises

Frequently asked questions

Why does my blood pressure drop during dialysis?

Removing too much fluid too quickly can lower it. Your team adjusts your target dry weight over time.

What should I avoid before a session?

Heavy meals and exceeding your fluid limit. Bring your medicines and questions.
