Deceased Donor Kidney Transplant
How the deceased-donor route works in India — brain death, NOTTO, allocation and the waiting list.
Last updated: 2026-09-24
A deceased-donor transplant uses a kidney from a person declared brain-dead, with their family’s consent. In India this route is coordinated through NOTTO and the state registries.
How allocation works
Kidneys are allocated by blood group, medical urgency and waiting time. Your transplant centre registers you — you don’t register yourself.
Pledging to donate
You can record a pledge on the NOTTO registry. The pledge records your wish; in practice donation proceeds only with your family’s consent, so tell them clearly.
Frequently asked questions
What is brain death?
